Overview

What products can I sell in North America?
It depends on the product, category and brand. Some categories are open to all selling partners, others require a Professional seller account, others require authorisation to sell and others include products that cannot be sold by third-party sellers.
To sell branded products protected by copyright, trademark or patent, you must be the legal owner of the brand or an authorised reseller.
Should I start just in the US, or could I start in all North American marketplaces?
Choose where to start based on your specific business needs, taking into account the product category, distribution rights, resources and other factors. Many selling partners have launched their businesses across every Amazon store in North America with immediate success. Amazon features and services, such as Build International Listings (BIL) and Fulfilment by Amazon North America, make it easy to sell across Amazon's North American marketplaces.

Of course, if you're not comfortable selling on all three websites yet, or if your distribution rights don't cover all regions, you can start with just one or two.

With a North American Unified Seller Account, you can switch as you see fit between the amazon.com, amazon.ca and amazon.com.mx selling tools in Seller Central to list products and fulfil orders in multiple Amazon marketplaces. You can sell in one, two or all three Amazon marketplaces available in North America. When managing your Amazon inventory on marketplaces in the United States, Canada and Mexico, it's important that you understand the difference between an international SKU and the specific SKU on the Amazon marketplace in Seller Central. You can find more information on these topics here.
What are the differences between selling in Europe and selling in the United States on Amazon.com?
Amazon has designed all its global websites so that the sales process is consistent and familiar, no matter where you are selling. Many services and processes that you're familiar with in the United States, such as Fulfilment by Amazon, Prime and Sponsored Products, work in a similar way on North American Amazon marketplaces.

However, due to differences in regulations, culture and language, each Amazon marketplace does have some unique features. Here are some of the main ones to bear in mind:
  • Taxes: The sales tax system in North America is different from the European VAT system. You should consult a tax advisor to find out about sales tax in the US. To find an advisor, use our Service provider network.
  • Product compliance: When you select an Amazon marketplace to sell on, you need to know if your product is suitable for that country. First of all, it is essential to ensure that you comply with all laws in each country. In addition, product standards differ from country to country. For more information, see our Restricted products help section.
Is it difficult to start selling in North America?
Starting to sell in a new geographic region such as North America is pretty serious. However, for many sellers, the time that they spend researching and managing requirements at the start pays off in sales to millions of new customers. Amazon offers a variety of tools and services that make launching in North America simple.

Just like when you first started selling in Europe, your success in North America will vary based on factors unique to your business, such as the product category, your margins and any regulatory requirements. It's important to take all the time you need early in the process to fully consider all the pros and cons of selling on a new Amazon marketplace. Our guide to crafting an Amazon marketplace entry strategy can help you.

Requirements

What do I need to do to sell on Amazon in North America?
There are four main steps to start selling in North America:
  • Decide where and what to sell, taking into account factors such as local tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Register an account and list your products.
  • Ship your products and fulfil orders.
  • Manage your business, with customer service and returns.
What North American regulations do I need to consider?
Do I need a US business entity or bank account?
No. You can continue to use your Spanish bank account and business entity. The Amazon Currency Converter for Sellers helps you convert British pounds and euros to your preferred local currency.

Account and listings

Can I use my current Spanish account to sell in North America?
No, you'll need to register for a North American account.
Can I transfer my Amazon.es product listings to North American Amazon marketplaces?
Yes, this can be done with our Build International Listings tool. The Build International Listings tool saves time when managing your listings and when creating and updating them at the same time across multiple Amazon European marketplaces using your Unified Account. Once you have created and launched listings on your primary "source" marketplace, you can select these listings and identify a target marketplace where you don't currently have any offers. Build International Listings has the following automatic functionalities:
  • Create listings in multiple target marketplaces based on the products that you sell in the source marketplace.
  • Each time that you add or delete a listing, the listings on your target Amazon marketplaces are also updated.
  • Adjust the prices on your target marketplaces based on changes that you make to the prices in the source marketplace, according to the repricing rules you set.
  • Adjust the prices on your target Amazon marketplaces to reflect exchange rate fluctuations with the currency of the source Amazon marketplace.
Do North American product listings require a new ASIN?
No, not usually. Product ASINs are "international" and are only different if the product is substantially different from the original ASIN. For example, if you had three versions of the product that varied depending on the type of plug (Europe, the UK and the US, for example), each version would have its own ASIN. However, if the products are not substantially different (such as colour differences), there would not be a different ASIN for each variation.
I am authorised to sell products that require authorisation for my category in Spain. Do I need to obtain new authorisation to sell these products in North America? What documents do I need?
Yes, you may need a new authorisation for North America because different countries have different regulations. During the application process, you will need to submit the appropriate documents.
